Frequently asked questions

The questions patients ask first.

Straight answers, written by our own providers. Anything we missed is exactly what the free consultation is for.

Getting started

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. It is free, and there is no obligation — a chance to talk to a real person about your goals and how we can help.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No referral is needed to request a consultation — just reach out and we guide you from there. If your specific insurance plan ever requires one for a particular service, we tell you on your call.

What happens at the first visit?

It starts with a real conversation about how you feel and what you want to change. Your provider reviews your history, orders labs when clinically appropriate, and explains everything in plain language before any plan is made — and gives you time to decide.

How do I prepare for my first appointment?

Complete your patient forms online ahead of time, bring a photo ID and your insurance card, and jot down what you want to cover — symptoms, timing, and questions. That is it.

Is ACWH part of a hospital system?

No. We are named for Ascension Parish, where the practice has been since 2005. Ascension Center for Women's Health is independent and physician-owned, not owned or managed by any hospital system or corporate entity. We do use our local hospitals for testing or services not offered here. Care decisions are made by Dr. Adams and our providers together with you — they are not governed by any outside institution's directives. Our full range of women's health services, including contraception counseling and well-woman care, is provided here.

Will I be talked into treatments I don’t need?

No. We are an independent, physician-owned medical practice, not a sales floor. We recommend only what is clinically appropriate, many visits begin with a conversation rather than a prescription, and you are always free to take time to decide.

Your care

Who will I see at my visits?

A consistent, familiar provider — Dr. Adams, Sarah Dottolo, or Cristel Capone — the same face each visit. Everyone practices to one standard under Dr. Adams’ clinical leadership.

How soon will I feel different on hormone therapy?

It varies from person to person. Hormone therapy is individualized, and your provider discusses realistic expectations and timing with you at your visit.

What are hormone pellets?

Tiny, custom-dosed pellets placed under the skin in a brief office procedure. They release hormones steadily for roughly three to four months — no daily creams or weekly shots to remember.

Where do I get my labs drawn?

In our Gonzales office, or — for telehealth patients — at LabCorp (our preferred lab) or any lab you choose, anywhere in Louisiana. We send the order; you pick the location.

Can I be seen by telehealth?

Yes, for follow-ups. New patients come to our Gonzales office for the first visit — peptide consultations are the exception and can start by video. After that, follow-up visits happen by secure video anywhere in Louisiana, with office visits for pellet insertions, exams and Emsella.

Do you care for men, too?

We do. Alongside our women’s health focus, our providers offer hormone care for men — including low testosterone — in the same unhurried, private setting.

Do you offer medical weight loss?

Yes — physician-guided, realistic plans, including GLP-1 medications when clinically appropriate, with labs and follow-up built in.

Cost & insurance

How does payment work?

With Blue Cross Blue Shield or Aetna, most office visits are covered, including well-woman and gynecology visits and hormone consultations. Some services are not billed to insurance, like medical weight loss, peptides and the pellet procedure. We check your coverage and go over what applies to you before your visit.

Is financing available?

Many patients use HSA or FSA funds for cash-pay services. If you need financing, CareCredit is accepted — just ask during your free consultation.

What makes ACWH different from a big clinic?

We are independent and physician-owned: unhurried visits, real continuity, and a board-certified team that has cared for this community for 21 years — not corporate medicine.

Is The Med Spa of Ascension part of ACWH?

No. The Med Spa of Ascension is a separate aesthetics business in the same building on South Burnside Avenue in Gonzales, and Dr. Adams serves as its medical director. Ascension Center for Women's Health is a medical practice for hormone therapy, hormone pellets, menopause care, men's health, Emsella, peptides and medical weight loss. We don't offer Botox, fillers or facials here. For med spa services, visit themedspaofascension.com.
